From 1 September

The River Within is a photographic exploration of the River Thames from source to sea through the seasons by kayak, by photographer Annette Price.

By being very close to the water, even getting in the water at times, she has been able to create intimate images of the River Thames, showing how the river changes in character, growing as it flows 215 miles towards the sea, changing through the seasons.

In January 2017 she began the project by photographing the Source near Kemble in the Cotswolds, where the Thames is no more than a ditch and by December she was photographing central London. This project will end by her photographing the Thanet wind farm and the Maunsell Sea Forts in the outer reaches of the Thames Estuary, where the river flows into the North Sea on the East coast.

By working from a kayak, Annette has been able to get into otherwise difficult or inaccessible places to sometimes photograph unusual perspectives and angles of otherwise familiar objects and places. For the first few miles, where there wasn’t enough water for a kayak, she wore wellies and a drysuit and waded into the water, sometimes lying in it. But from Cricklade all the images have been made from the perspective of the kayak.

We are delighted to have this work exhibited at the Wharf for the duration of the Thames Festival and until the end of the year. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to purchase refreshments if they choose or book a meal.
